REINVENTING THE PLEASURE OF READING

Black Paper Printing

Publishing the written word has changed significantly over the last two millennia. From papyrus scrolls and ornate manuscripts, to printed pamphlets and the modern bound novel, how we convey our thoughts to the world has always been in constant flux.

Indeed, books, printing, and publishing have often defined history, with each change ushering in a change of how society thinks, communicates, and acts.

But throughout history, one thing about published works has remained the same: the presentation of black or dark text on a white background.

This is about to change.

  • WHY BLACK PAPER

Black text on a white background can be tough on the eyes. If you’ve ever spent a day in front of a computer screen, reading or writing large amounts of text, you’ll recognise the feeling. Tired eyes, headaches, and a lack of focus. Scanning text against the glare of a white background makes your eyes and brain work harder, leaving you feeling exhausted and unable to concentrate after sustained periods.

This isn’t limited to electronic devices, either. Long stretches of reading novels, magazines, or journals can have the same effect.

When I first noticed this after long days in front of a screen, I switched over to Dark Mode. I quickly noticed that not only was this less tiring on the eyes, it also made the text itself far easier to read. Light text against a dark background really leapt off the page, so I began to experiment.

I started taking notes with a white pen on black sheets of paper, and the results were outstanding. Not only were my thoughts easier to read, but the effect was also incredibly beautiful, almost a piece of art in itself. Soon enough, I was using a black paper notebook for everything.

  • REINVENTING THE PLEASURE OF READING

Books have always strived to be beautiful objects as well as communicative tools. From the illuminated manuscripts of medieval monks, to the gilded-edge leather-bound tomes of the 19th and 20th centuries, books are pieces of art in their own right.

Black paper printing is the latest example of beauty and aesthetics in the history of the written word.

Black paper printing offers a unique experience for the reader. Books printed on black paper are visually stunning, creating a remarkable, eye-catching effect that stands out from the page. Black paper printing allows books to be more than just functional items, but rather unique pieces of design as well. Something beautiful and practical - a wonderful combination of form and function that elevates the written word.

All of our limited edition books will be fully printed on black paper using only white ink. Printed and bound using centuries-old techniques, traditions, and technologies, each special edition will represent a piece of history. These processes are longer, harder, and more expensive than ordinary printing, but the final result is something extraordinarily beautiful.
